One of the better cell phone developments in the past year has been the proliferation of stereo Bluetooth headset . Thanks to the practical design, we had no trouble slipping the headset on and off. Though the area with the power control and the charger jack is made of hard plastic, the ends are made of a rubberized material that bends easily. The ear hooks slipped easily on and off for us, but users with larger noggins may want to try the S9 before buying. On the whole, the fit is comfortable and the light weight made it barely noticeable, even for longer-wearing periods. The fit was quite secure as well. But the 0.5-inch earbuds did have a tendency to pinch if not positioned just-so. Indeed, it took us a few minutes of fiddling with the earbuds until they slipped comfortably into the ear. On the upside, the ear tips are made a flexible rubber and you get a choice of three sizes.

While previously it seemed that handset manufacturers were consciously avoiding the feature, a simultaneous push for music phones has, thankfully, made stereo Bluetooth a reality. Moto smartly separated the phone and music controls on the S9. A Talk button and the volume control sits just near the left earbud. The former is easy to find and has a soft, tactile feel; the volume control is touch-sensitive and barely needs to be pressed. We haven't seen touch controls in very many headsets, but it's a feature we love on the S9. At times, they could be a bit too sensitive, but overall it was a very user-friendly experience. A music Play button sits near the right earbud and is also touch-sensitive.

We tested the Motorola S9 Bluetooth adapter  Active Headphones with the Motorola Razr V3xx. The pairing process took only a few seconds and the connection remained strong. Also, we were able to reconnect instantly after turning both devices off for a short period. Overall sound quality was quite good for all kinds of audio. We could hear callers plainly and there was plenty of volume, even in windy or noisy environments. Callers reported few problems on their ends and we had no trouble being understood by voice-automated calling systems. Our only complaint was that voices on our side sounded harsh and almost robotic at times. However, the effect wasn't constant, so we don't consider it a deal-breaker. Other calling features include voice dialing, call reject, and last-number redial.

Sound from the music player was better than the call sound. We loved the stereo experience and we were impressed by the volume range. Keep in mind that the sound wasn't the sharpest we've heard, but it's more than adequate for most uses. Conveniently, the music automatically pauses when you receive a call, and then resumes after you hang up. We also tested the headphones with streaming video clips and enjoyed solid audio quality. The S9 has a promised battery life of six hours on a single charge.

When the Jabra BT8010 arrived early this year at CES, we declared it one of the more innovative products we've seen thanks to its dual function as both a mono and a stereo Bluetooth headset--just add a secondary earpiece to convert from mono to stereo. While we loved the idea, we were rather disappointed with how big and heavy the earpieces were. Fast-forward several months later, and Plantronics has hopped on to a similar idea with a much improved design. Dubbed the Voyager 855, it also consists of a bluetooth headset with a detachable stereo cable, but it's significantly more lightweight, more comfortable, and has better sound quality. Not only that, but it also has a sliding boom mic for better audio clarity. For those who want a stereo Bluetooth headset that can be used as a simple mono one as well, the Voyager 855 fits the bill and more. It will cost you though--the Voyager 855 is currently retailing for $149.95, but you can shop around for a better deal.

. On its own, the mono headset unit looks like a regular Bluetooth headsets. It looks very sleek and stylish, and we liked its black coat with silver trimming color scheme. Weighing in at a very lightweight 0.53 ounce, Plantronics claims that it is the smallest and lightest stereo Bluetooth headset to-date. Measuring 2.25 inches by 0.5 inch by 0.6 inch, the Voyager 855 is also on the slim side, though the length does increase to about 3 inches when the boom mic is slid out. The boom mic is actually the bottom three-quarters of the headset's front face, which can be slid down via two tiny plastic grips on the sides of the boom, or by simply pushing it downwards.

The sliding mechanism is very smooth, though we felt that the act of sliding the boom down has the danger of dislodging the cheap bluetooth headset from the ear. Sliding the boom mic out provides better audio clarity (as it places the mic closer to the mouth), and you can also slide it out to answer calls. Sliding it back in will end the call.

Above the sliding boom is the multifunction button, while the right spine is home to the mute and volume keys. When in stereo mode, the mute key doubles as play/pause, while the volume keys doubles as track forward/back. We found these side keys to be extremely small, requiring us to use our fingernail to press them properly. Behind thebluetooth adapter   is the earpiece, plus a slot for an optional ear loop for additional stability. The slot is also used to attach the stereo cable to the secondary earpiece. Both earpieces have silicone form-fitting earbud covers, and Plantronics had the foresight to include a variety of earbud cover sizes to accommodate different size ears. We found the fit to be extremely comfortable and snug and wore it for hours without noticeable discomfort. However, as we mentioned, the act of sliding the boom mic down sometimes resulted in the earpiece feeling a bit loose.

The secondary earpiece looks just like a regular earbud attached to an ear loop via an 18-inch cable. The Plantronics Voyager 855 consists of two pieces: the mono headset unit, which houses all the controls, and the detachable earpiece cable, which converts the 855 into a stereo bluetooth headsetThe ear loop is then attached to the headset unit via the aforementioned slot. It can be configured to be placed in either the left or right ear. The entire stereo setup is worn with the cable draped behind the neck.

Features of the Voyager 855 are pretty basic. There's the typical answering, ending, and rejecting calls, as well as call mute, voice-dial support, and last-number redial. The Jabra BT8010 solves that problem--not only is it a mono Bluetooth headsets but it also converts into a stereo Bluetooth headset simply by attaching a second earpiece. This simple innovation is what prompted CNET to nominate it for a Best of CES award in the MP3 category earlier this year. Along with a useful OLED display and built-in noise cancellation technology, the Jabra BT8010 is definitely a great choice if you have a music phone with stereo Bluetooth. The Jabra BT8010 is currently available for $149, which is a bit pricey for a Bluetooth headset, but the BT8010's features make it well worth the money.

The Jabra BT8010 consists of two pieces; the mono unit, which has the OLED display and all the buttons, and the stereo unit, which is the secondary earpiece that connects to the first via a flexible cable. When left unattached, the mono unit looks like most other Bluetooth headsets. It is slightly large (measuring at 2.4 by 0.5 by 1.0 inch) but that's probably due to the 0.8-inch scrollable OLED display on the front. We really like the appearance of the display--the blue characters look nice and bright when compared to the dark background. The display shows the headset's volume level, a battery strength indicator, whether or not the headset is in phone or music mode, the name of the device it's connected to, and caller ID. It also has a scrollable call history of the latest 15 incoming calls, plus you can scroll through the headset's own internal phonebook, which holds up to 30 contacts. You can dial directly from this list of numbers and you can erase it if you wish. You also can change the orientation of the screen depending on whether you're wearing it on the right or left side. The second earpiece looks like a mini-me version of the first one (measuring only 1.8 by 0.7 by 0.3 inch), except it doesn't have the screen nor the buttons. The silver wheel on the second earpiece has no purpose and is just for cosmetic reasons.

The BT8010 has quite an attractive black tapered design with a prominent silver jog wheel above the OLED display. The jog wheel lets you scroll through the contacts listed on the phone, or you could use it to control the headset's volume. Within the jog wheel is a multifunctional button that in addition to letting you answer and end calls, also lets you play and pause music. The headset's right spine is home to a menu button, a mode button, and an on/off slider switch that can be slid downward to activate pairing. The menu button lets you access the recent call list, the phonebook, and the settings menu. The mode button simply lets you toggle between phone and music mode.

Turn the bluetooth headset over, and you'll find a rather large earpiece and a flexible ear loop. We're big fans of the flexible ear loop, as it can be bent in a number of ways to fit comfortably around the ear, plus it can be switched around to fit either the right or left ear. Even though the earpiece is the kind that rests against the ear instead of being inserted in, we still found it a tad uncomfortable, especially for smaller ears. We would've appreciated an in-ear style with a choice of earbud covers, but that's our personal preference. When the second earpiece is attached, you wear the cable around your neck much like a typical pair of headphones.

Features of the headset are pretty impressive. Aside from the internal phonebook of up to 30 contacts, you can use it to answer, end, and reject calls, play and pause music, or skip to the next song in a playlist.
